What are dehumidifiers and how they work?

Dehumidification

If the relative humidity of an environment is high (near 100%), there is a risk of mold formation and propagation of certain bacteria. This happens when the rooms are poorly ventilated: the humidity produced in the baths, in the kitchen , by plants and by the people is not removed.

Nearly two-thirds of allergic phenomena of man (asthma, rhinitis and some cutaneous manifestations of hypersensitivity) are due to the presence of micro environmental mites, as well as its tangible remains and further waste they left in a place where an individual resides or works.

The solution is to dehumidify the environment.
What are dehumidifiers and how they work?

The dehumidifier controls the ambient humidity, thus avoiding corrosion, rust, damp walls.

Conserves paintings, furs, clothes, documents, stereos and photographic, precision instruments, furniture, and a multitude of objects, protecting them against moisture causing mold.

The end result is the well being and comfort to enjoy a balanced environment, free from undesirable traits as already mentioned (mold, mildew, etc ...).

These dehumidifier devices have the capacity to maintain humidity in a closed environment in percentages considered healthy - between 40% and 60% through a cooling condensation process (mold and bacteria proliferate more strongly when the RH exceeds 65%).

What is Relative humidity (RH) of the air?
It is the amount of water in the air relative to the amount it is able to retain.

How the dehumidifier works?

Ambient air contains moisture in form of water vapor in variable quantity according to the temperature. Water vapor comes in contact with the cold surface of a coil inside the unit; a fan conducts the humid air through this cold surface turning the steam into water droplets which are collected in a container installed on its back.

The dehumidifier can be programmed to operate in three ways: Continuous, Dry and Extra Dry.

The difference of these cycles is in the desired relative humidity of the environment wherein the Dry moisture will be between 50% to 60% in extra dry at about 50% and still when it is desired maximum dehumidification.

Few important Feature to be considered when buying a new dehumidifier:
  • The cycle begins again when this moisture change, since the dehumidifier is equipped with a humidistat that according to the program the dehumidifier on and off automatically.
  • Turn off automatically when the tank is filled with water. Have a light indicating this fact;
  • Automatic humidistat that keeps moisture at the desired level;
  • Combination dehumidifier and heater;
  • Compressors and quiet fans;
  • Easily accessible controls;
  • Easy to clean;
  • Drainage pipe Connection;
  • Wheels;
  • Housing resistant to rust.
  • The most important feature is the air water removal capacity in liters per minute.

Dehumidifier in Food industry: The food industry uses the feature offered by the dehumidifier to prevent mold contamination in stored food. Generally, this technique is used in cold chambers, which have a high moisture content (so it needs dehumidifiers suitable for this application). It is used to keep moisture at a rate that does not develop mold without changing the environmental conditions of food.
