All we know that smoking increases the risk of cancer and premature death. However, when we are hearing reports of elderly people who never quit smoking.

A team from the University of Oxford in the United States evaluated a group of 90 elderly smokers and identified a genetic variation that would be responsible for making these people are more resistant to smoke and pollution.

According to researchers, led by Morgan Levine, the body of these individuals would be more efficient to repair damage in cells. So in addition to live longer, these people also would have a 11% lower risk of having cancer.

The discovery, published in the Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences, reinforces the notion that longevity is linked not only to environmental factors. Genetics also plays an important role for this.
